In the last year and a half, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some of today’s leading entrepreneurs, celebrities and influencers on The Pursuit. Together, my guests -- including Gary Vaynerchuk, Tony Robbins, the Property Brothers and Barbara Corcoran -- have collectively written more than 15 New York Times bestselling books. They employ more than 800 people and impact tens of millions of people on social media. If that's not enough, their total combined net worth is estimated to be more than $800 million.

When closely studying successful people, you realize that each story is unique. Each person has his or her own quirks, success habits, turning points and failures. How they get to the destination of success often varies quite a bit. Once they arrive there, however, they start to have similar perspectives. They also tend to agree on their advice for those launching a brand and starting a business.

Here are the top five keys to success when you're just getting started, from some of the most successful people in the world.

Tony Robbins is a business and life strategist who helps people achieve personal and professional breakthroughs. He has reached millions through his wildly popular motivational seminars, his coaching of CEOs, U.S. presidents and billionaire hedge fund managers and his five internationally acclaimed books.

Joe Berlinger is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker whose films include the landmark documentaries Brother’s Keeper, Paradise Lost and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, a film that re-defined the rockumentary genre. In addition to his documentary work, he is a two-time Emmy and Peabody winner and has created many hours of television as both a producer and director.

After attending Robbins’ "Date With Destiny" event, Berlinger felt compelled to share his experience with the world through film. His team embedded themselves into Robbins’ event to give viewers an immersive look at the seminar. After years of planning and editing, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru was released in July of 2016.

In this unique interview, Robbins and Berlinger come together to discuss creativity, vulnerability, risk and reward. How can entrepreneurs and artists face repeated failure, criticism and rejection, and still find both achievement and fulfillment? Listen to the duo share their advice.

The story of the hustling D-student who built a business from a dorm room never gets old, which is why I loved interviewing Kenny Dichter. That’s exactly how the serial entrepreneur, now the CEO and founder of Wheels Up, got his start. But what sets Dichter apart is his track record since then: building and selling one successful business after another.

In college, Dichter and a friend began creating and selling T-shirts with “Wisconsin flair” at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The apparel line started to gain traction, so Dichter moved the operation from his dorm to a nearby storefront. That business grew to three locations before Dichter sold it upon graduation.

After his first success, the father of one of his friends, a clothing manufacturer, decided to back Dichter’s next apparel venture. His operation moved from Wisconsin to New York City, and he was soon fulfilling orders for the likes of Wal-Mart and Sears. As the company reached a tipping point, Dichter decided to sell it and start a new venture, a process he would repeat over and over again.

His next business took him into the world of sports marketing. His friend Jesse Itzler, a jingle writer, saw an opportunity to build a business around the music that played in arenas during sporting events. Dichter provided the strategy for Itzler’s idea, and the two sold that business to SFX Entertainment for more than $4 million in 1998.

By that point, Dichter had experienced substantial success firsthand, and he noticed that no one in his social circles flew commercial anymore. On one of his first private flights, the idea for Marquis Jet was born. Marquis Jet was the first aviation option that allowed members to reduce travel costs by buying blocks of hours on a pre-paid card instead of purchasing their own aircraft. Again, Dichter grew his idea and made an exit, selling Marquis Jet to Warren Buffet’s NetJets in 2010. Before returning to aviation with Wheels Up in 2014, Dichter built and sold another business, Tequila Avion, an ultra-premium brand that sold for $100 million.

His latest success offers the private aviation industry a membership model without spending requirements or hourly minimums. Wheels Up raised $115 million in funding in February 2016, and according to Ditcher, it now holds a valuation of $521.5 million with a projected worth of $1 to $1.5 billion by 2020.

Clearly, Dichter knows what he’s doing. Here is his advice for entrepreneurial success.

If you’re a writer looking to build and monetize your personal platform -- or you’re hoping to leave your corporate job to become a solopreneur -- you will love Jon Acuff’s story.

Acuff is a New York Times bestselling author of five books and an in-demand speaker who has appeared on stage for clients such as Whirlpool, Microsoft and Comedy Central. He’s a social media influencer with more than 275,000 followers and his blog posts have been read by 4 million people.

How did he do it?

Well, if you’ve read his books, you’ve followed his story. He left his corporate job for his dream, started a business and reinvented himself a few times along the way.

Before going solo, Acuff worked his way up in an advertising career, eventually writing for brands such as The Home Depot, Staples and later landed his dream job, writing and speaking for the Dave Ramsey team. After taking the leap? He had his best financial year ever and books speaking gigs a year.

Listen in for the key steps to leaving your job, creating great work and achieving solo success.

Do you know what a fiduciary is? If you do (and you never went to law school), that knowledge may be based on the mission and vision of Elliot Weissbluth.

Weissbluth is the founder and CEO of HighTower, a firm of fiduciary advisors with an open-source platform of various industry-leading financial products and solutions. To those outside of the finance sector, this means that instead of working with one financial institution’s broker, who sells you an option of that institution’s products and services, you work with an independent advisor who is legally obligated to advise you on the best product or solution for your portfolio -- from various financial institutions.

When Weissbluth founded HighTower in 2007, he entered the finance industry as a disruptor from the outside. Now, however, he is regarded as an industry figurehead, and he has been included on Worth Magazine’s Power 100 list, Investment Advisor’s list of top 25 most influential people in the industry and many more in recent years. He is also a regular guest on CNBC, Fox Business and Bloomberg.

Weissbluth is not only passionate about the financial industry, but he also has a lot of unique insights about starting a business in a new industry, scaling that business, securing funding, growing a team and more.

Here are his keys to entrepreneurial success when disrupting an industry.

Since founding the now award-winning New York-based agency MRY in his bedroom in 2002, Matt Britton has worked with some of the world’s leading brands, such as Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Visa. He has also become a leader in social media marketing and millennial marketing. Britton has spoken at industry conferences around the globe and has become a featured advertising expert for CNBC, Mashable, Forbes, The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, among others.

How did he go from solo consultant to employing more than 500 people and then a multi-million-dollar exit?

First, he faced failure, launching an internet marketing firm out of college that burst along with the internet bubble. Even with clients such as Sony, eBay and Evite, the firm couldn’t survive and was bailed out by Youthstream Media Networks. He stayed at Youthstream as an employee for less than two years, then took the leap again, forming Mr Youth, which later became MRY.

Britton has lived out the romantic one-man-show-turned-giant-agency story. Here are his best pieces of advice for consultants and freelancer out there eager to do the same.

If you aren’t familiar with Simon Sinek’s name, you’re probably familiar with the movement he created, launched with the release of his international bestselling book, Start With Why. You may also recognize his face from his subsequent TED talk, one of the organization’s most popular videos ever, with more than 28 million views. This New York Times bestselling author and speaker is not just spreading an idea, he’s leading a crusade. His goal? To build a world where the vast majority of people go home every day feeling fulfilled.

His refreshing views on business and leadership have attracted meetings with organizations such as Pfizer, NBC/Universal, 3M, Costco, Deckers, Ernst & Young, JetBlue and more. Beyond TED, he’s addressed the United Nations, the United States Congress and the senior leadership of the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps and Army. You may have read his commentary and ideas in publications such as The New York Times, Inc., NPR and Businessweek.

When it comes to spreading a message, he has done it all. Though I had read about why he created this movement, I wanted to learn how he did it. Listen to find the answer.

Entrepreneurs, marketers and writers can learn a lot from comedians. They write well, they understand culture, they blend artistry and commerce and most of them have had to single-handedly build their brands from the ground up. So I jumped at the chance to interview Kathy Griffin during her Celebrity Run-Ins, My A-Z Index press tour in New York City.

Not only is Griffin an Emmy- and Grammy-winning comedian and actress, she is also a Guinness World Record holder, the owner of three corporations, an online influencer with more than two million raving followers and a New York Times best-selling author. Her estimated net worth is around $15 million, so obviously she has figured out the business aspect of show business.

Here are a few lessons that Griffin has learned by achieving success in a fiercely competitive industry.
